A classroom based on trust and devoid of fear is a fantastic place for kids to learn but this foundation of trust is not an end result, it's a good first step. A classroom and school culture in which students behave well for the "right reasons" is a tall order. Lawrence Kohlberg's six stages of moral development can serve as building blocks to help kids grow as students and people.
How might Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development be utilized in your daily management and instruction? How can you incorporate this developmental continuum in a format in which students regularly self-evaluate their motivations and internal drive?
